Tracing A City, also known as TAC, started its journey around late 2017, initiated by a group of curious individuals from Southeast Asia. Our first inaugural gathering was organized in Kolkata, near Shahid Minar. We imagined this platform as an independent initiative for fearless curatorial intersections. Initially, we envisioned engaging in cross-cultural action research within the context of artistic research and its plural methods to understand the subversive practices of our time and counter the linear 'post-truth' reality. At that phase, five initial minds came together from Howrah, border Kolkata, Assam, and Bangladesh. Our motivation was to foster dialogue on 'cultural archetypes' and create a safe space for practice for diverse genders, colors, and interests rather than cultural reproduction.
Following the evolving nature of this platform, we managed to gather a few meetings in different people’s domains where we exercised our curious inquiries. It was mid-2018 when the initiative began to lose momentum due to a lack of collective meetings, and the initial core members became occupied with their practical consequences. Around late 2018, Kaur Chimuk, one of the founding members, decided to pursue this platform as an ongoing research space where Kaur could continue the cultural research. This transition was mutual, and after a collective dialogue, Kaur began to organize this site formally in collaboration with a series of international institutions. |
Currently, we are taking an internal break to process past engagements. During this phase, we are only supporting a few ongoing initiatives, offering our curatorial resources, but for the rest of the time, we are planning to engage with future strategies. We believe that by 2025, we will be able to come back with new chapters of our extended initiative.
For mutual understanding: TAC functions as an intimate collective effort to explore the evolving nature of different cities by applying cultural-performative instincts. This is not conceptualized as a platform for cultural reproduction; rather, we consider it a safe space for practicing curator/researcher/cultural developers in terms of open-source collective practice. Tracing A City is trying to set up a network for cross-disciplinary communication around the world, but our focus area is South Asian independent experimental interest. TAC would like to invite diverse practitioners to become part of this initiative and help us grow together. TAC will primarily concentrate on three areas: curatorial space, collective time, and the marginal body.
